Sefa Soccer Academy’s U15 Squad Takes on Elite American Competition in Unforgettable Washington State Tour

For any ambitious youth soccer program, the true measure of growth lies in testing itself against the very best. Last weekend, the Sefa Soccer Academy 2011/2012 boys’ team did exactly that, crossing the border into Washington State for two high-level friendlies against a pair of the Pacific Northwest’s most respected soccer institutions: Eastside FC and Seattle Sounders FC.

Both of these clubs stand among the organizations that are actively raising the standard of youth soccer player development in North America. Through professional coaching structures, elite training environments, and clear player development pathways, programs like Eastside FC and Seattle Sounders FC continue to shape what modern youth soccer training and development should look like. For Sefa Soccer Academy, sharing the pitch with them was both an honor and a valuable measuring stick.

From the opening whistle to the final handshake, the trip delivered everything a development-focused academy could hope for — intensity, quality opposition, and memories that will stay with our players and families for years to come.

Day One: A Battle of Wills Against Eastside FC’s ECNL U15 Side

First up, on Saturday, our boys squared off against the Eastside FC U15 team — a program competing in the ECNL, one of the most competitive youth soccer platforms in the United States. The match took place at Preston Park in Issaquah, Washington, a fitting stage for what turned out to be a fast-paced, physically demanding, and tactically fascinating contest.

Make no mistake — this was no ordinary friendly. In many ways, the game resembled a chess match: full of smart plays, intelligent decision-making, and tactical adjustments from both benches. Both teams pressed high, competed for every ball, and showcased the kind of quality that makes cross-border matchups so valuable. For our players, the experience of facing an established ECNL opponent was nothing short of invaluable. Moreover, it offered a clear benchmark of where our program stands against elite American competition.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Tariq, head coach of the Eastside FC squad, as well as Jennifer Shepherd, Eastside FC’s Registrar and Scheduler, whose organization and hospitality made the fixture possible. Consequently, we look forward to building on this relationship in the seasons ahead.

Day Two: Testing Ourselves Against the Seattle Sounders FC Academy

The following day brought a different kind of challenge. Our team travelled to face the Seattle Sounders FC U15 Academy side at the club’s brand-new, world-class home: the Providence Swedish Performance Center & Clubhouse in Renton, Washington.

Opened in February 2024, the facility is widely regarded as one of the finest in Major League Soccer. It houses all of the Sounders’ soccer operations — from the Academy to Tacoma Defiance and the First Team — and features four full-size training pitches, a world-class gym, recovery rooms, and 50,000 square feet of state-of-the-art space. Simply put, it is an environment built for excellence.

The match itself lived up to the surroundings. The Sounders were relentless in their aggressive pressing and counterpressing throughout the game, and the combination of their players’ technical level and sheer speed makes the Sounders FC U15 side one of the strongest teams in the United States — and in MLS Next. Intense, competitive, and played at a relentless tempo, the game challenged our boys in every phase — technically, tactically, and physically. Above all, it gave them a firsthand look at the standards required at the professional academy level. Experiences like these cannot be replicated in training; they must be earned on the pitch against top-tier opposition.

Beyond the game, our players and families were treated to something truly special. Wade Webber, the Sounders’ Director of Development, graciously guided our group on a tour of the new facility — walking us through the locker rooms, training spaces, and the many areas where future MLS professionals are shaped every day. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Wade as well as Ethan O’Neill, coach of the Sounders FC U15 team we faced, for their warmth, generosity, and professionalism.

More Than Two Games: An Investment in Our Players’ Futures

Ultimately, trips like this are about far more than results on a scoreboard. They are about exposure, growth, and ambition. By competing against an ECNL side and an MLS academy in the same weekend, our 2011/2012 boys gained experiences that will accelerate their development and broaden their footballing horizons.

Furthermore, these matches reflect the core mission of Sefa Soccer Academy: to prepare our players for the highest levels of the game by consistently placing them in demanding, elite environments — at home and abroad.
