SEFA Previews the New Fields at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex
The Burnaby Lake Sports Complex has always felt like a second home for SEFA Soccer Academy — so when the City of Burnaby invited us to an exclusive preview of the newly upgraded Fields 1 and 2 at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West on Tuesday, August 18, we circled the date immediately. After months of watching construction fences go up, we finally got to step onto the fresh turf.
Why the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex Upgrades Mattered
First, a little background. Anyone who has played on Fields 1 and 2 over the past few years knew they were showing their age. In fact, both fields had outlived their expected 10-year lifespan, and the wear was becoming impossible to ignore. Consequently, the City of Burnaby made the call to close both fields this past spring and give them a complete makeover.
And this wasn’t just a quick resurfacing, either. On the contrary, the project included brand-new artificial turf, repairs and upgrades to the base underneath, improved drainage, and — perhaps most importantly for our young players — a new shock pad under Field 1 to reduce the risk of impact-related injuries. Moreover, the fields were redesigned with multi-sport use in mind: Field 1 now features removable football uprights, while Field 2 continues to serve soccer and field hockey with simplified, cleaner markings.
In other words, these aren’t just replacement fields. They’re safer, smarter, and better than ever.
An Afternoon to Remember at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West
As a community partner, SEFA was invited alongside other local sports organizations for an early, behind-the-scenes look before the fields officially open to the public. Naturally, we jumped at the chance.
From the moment we stepped onto the fresh turf, the difference was obvious. The surface felt softer underfoot, the new markings looked crisp and clean, and the whole facility simply felt renewed. Additionally, City staff were on hand to walk us through the project, answer questions, and explain how community feedback — including input from groups like ours — helped shape the final design. That last part meant a lot to us; it’s a reminder that when local clubs and the City work together, everyone wins.
Of course, no celebration is complete without a little hospitality, and the City generously provided refreshments and a warm welcome throughout the afternoon.
What the New Burnaby Lake Sports Complex Fields Mean for SEFA Families
So, what does all of this mean for our players and parents? Quite a lot, actually.
Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West is one of SEFA’s key training locations, and these upgraded fields will directly benefit our programs once they reopen for public use. Ultimately, better surfaces mean safer training, faster play, and a better experience for every child who steps onto the pitch — from our youngest Mini Stars to our elite-level athletes.
Furthermore, investments like this one show just how seriously Burnaby takes youth sport. As a club that has grown up on these fields, we couldn’t be prouder to call this facility home.
A Big Thank-You
Finally, we’d like to sincerely thank the City of Burnaby and its Parks, Recreation and Culture team for including SEFA in this special preview — and, above all, for continuing to invest in the fields at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex where our community’s young athletes learn, grow, and fall in love with the beautiful game.
We can’t wait to see you out there soon.
