Age Group: 4 — 7 years
Ball Size: 3 or 4

Objective:
The Toe Taps drill aims to improve coordination, balance, and ball control in young soccer players. This foundational exercise is ideal for beginners to get comfortable with the ball.

Instructions:

  1. Starting Position: Stand with your feet slightly apart, facing the ball.
  2. Execution: Gently tap the top of the ball with your right foot’s toes, then alternate with the left foot. Ensure each tap is controlled.
  3. Rhythm: Establish a consistent rhythm. Initially, focus on control rather than speed.
  4. Focus: Maintain eye contact with the ball to enhance concentration and coordination.

Repetitions and Sets:
Begin with 20 toe taps and rest briefly. Complete 5 sets initially. As proficiency increases, the number of repetitions and sets can be increased.

Progressing the Challenge:
Once the child is comfortable with the basic movement, encourage them to increase their speed. Use a timer to make it a fun challenge. They can try to beat their own record for the number of taps within a set time limit.

Equipment Needed:

  • A soccer ball (size 3 or 4).
  • A safe, flat area for practice.

Safety Tips:

  • Ensure the practice area is clear of obstacles.
  • Sports shoes are recommended for better grip and safety.

Progress Tracking:
Note the improvement in control and rhythm. As the child gains confidence, the taps should become more consistent, and the child should be able to do them quicker.

Fun Tip:
Make a game out of it! Use a timer to see how many toe taps your child can do in 30 seconds, and keep trying to beat their high score.
